It’s time once again for the weather predicting marmot, the groundhog,to make an appearance. How else,does one get to find out how many more weeks of winter we have in our future.
It has got me thinking about the 1993 movie of the same name starring Bill Murray. The film is about a meteorologist that keeps reliving the same day over and over again. A pleasant fantasy ,as long as the day being repeated is a particularly good one. On the other hand,if the day was less than delightful ,continually repeating it would be torture.
The most vivid example of anything even remotely similar for me ,was when my cherished Dad passed away. My dear Mum had been suffering from age related dementia so she would ask where Dad was. We told her he was gone, she would go into shock. Everyone would cry, then about 20 minutes later she would ask where Dad was, we would tell her again,and the cycle would be repeated. I can’t tell you how many times we told her over the next couple of days ,that same scenario with the same conclusion.That was right up there as far as worst days goes emotionally speaking.
You are probably wondering by now where am I going with this. The truth is, we all know people that can’t get past an event in their lives from years ago. Everything comes back to that moment in time.I think of this as THE GREAT DIVIDE. The mind seems to break off into ” The life you had before” and the “life you have had since.” Almost as though there was no connection between the two whatsoever.
We organize our lives at it’s very basic into divisions of time. Seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months and years. When a Groundhog Day event happens I think that time literally stops. From that point your life is played through the PVR. As long as you are in rewind you can follow along.
How do you transfer from PVR playback to real life? This is where a medical degree would be useful. I don’t claim to have answers, I can only say how I see it. We all have individual life experiences from which we learn. Sometimes though ,through sharing perspectives, we can discover something of value that can enrich our own lives.
With that in mind,here is my perspective. To transition from PVR playback to living life, you first have to realize that you are not living in the here and now. After all the PVR is only a digital recreation of something that already happened. Take a big breath, and give yourself permission to let go of the remote control. What a great name REMOTE CONTROL think about how true those words are. When in Groundhog Day mode you are literally left remote while giving up your control.
Fear of the unknown grips us all, at one time or another. In the case of a Groundhog Day phenomenon your physical self is already in the here and now. Therefore it is only the mind that needs to transition. Try to focus your thoughts on the side of the great divide that handles life after the event. Feel yourself settling in. Getting comfortable.
Let the other side of the divide have a well earned rest. Feel yourself letting go. Could this be classic emotional hoarding that tried to trick you disguised as something else? If you recall my previous posts on emotional weightloss, I did warn you that the baggage was like a mine field It can crop up anywhere. Perhaps I should change that to mind field. The mind after all has the starring role.
